South Africans who are passionate about justice, human rights, community service, and correctional oversight now have an opportunity to apply for Independent Correctional Centre Visitor (ICCV) positions under the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS).
These contract positions are being offered across several provinces in South Africa for a 36-month contract period. The posts are ideal for individuals who want to contribute to fairness, accountability, and inmate rights inside correctional facilities while gaining meaningful government-related work experience.
For many unemployed youth and community-minded South Africans, this opportunity could become an important stepping stone into public service and administrative careers.
The ICCV programme plays a very important role in ensuring that inmates are treated fairly and that correctional centres operate within the law. Successful applicants will work closely with inmates, correctional officials, and JICS inspectors to monitor conditions inside correctional facilities.

What Does an Independent Correctional Centre Visitor Do?
An ICCV works inside a correctional facility but independently from prison management.
Their responsibility is to listen to inmate complaints, monitor conditions, and report concerns to JICS.
Successful applicants will:
- Visit correctional facilities daily
- Engage with inmates and correctional officials
- Investigate inmate complaints
- Monitor prison conditions
- Report deaths, segregation, use of force, and restraints
- Support inspections and investigations
- Write detailed reports
- Capture complaints and administrative information
This is not a security officer role.
Instead, it is a community oversight and monitoring position focused on human rights and accountability.
Why This Opportunity is Important in South Africa
South Africa’s correctional system faces many challenges including overcrowding, inmate complaints, rehabilitation concerns, and human rights issues.
The ICCV programme helps ensure that inmates still receive constitutional protection while serving sentences.
This opportunity is important because it:
- Gives ordinary community members a voice in correctional oversight
- Creates contract employment opportunities
- Helps improve accountability in correctional centres
- Provides administrative and investigative work exposure
- Builds public sector experience
For unemployed matriculants, this role can also strengthen a CV for future government applications.
Salary and Contract Information
Successful applicants will receive:
- R89 046 per annum
- Additional 37% in lieu of benefits
- 36-month contract appointment
Although the salary is not extremely high, the opportunity offers valuable government experience and exposure to public administration systems.
