About the Thuthuka Bursary

The Thuthuka Bursary Fund supports financially disadvantaged students pursuing studies towards becoming Chartered Accountants in South Africa.

The programme is designed to help transform the accounting profession by increasing access to education and supporting future Chartered Accountants from underrepresented communities.

About SAICA

South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) is the leading professional body for Chartered Accountants in South Africa.

SAICA plays an important role in developing accounting professionals, maintaining industry standards, and supporting skills development within the financial sector.

Through the Thuthuka initiative, SAICA assists students with funding, mentorship, and academic support throughout their studies.

Fields of Study Funded

The bursary funds studies towards:

  • BCom Accounting (CA-stream)
  • Chartered Accountancy CA(SA) pathway

Other qualifications are generally not funded through the programme.

Participating Universities

Applicants must apply to a SAICA-supported university and approved qualification programme.

  • University of Johannesburg
  • University of KwaZulu-Natal
  • University of Cape Town
  • University of Fort Hare
  • University of the Witwatersrand
  • University of the Free State
  • Stellenbosch University
  • University of Pretoria
  • North-West University
  • Rhodes University
  • University of the Western Cape

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements before applying:

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Must be a Black African or Coloured applicant
  • Must currently be in Grade 12, out of school for no more than 2 years, or already studying a CA-stream BCom degree
  • Must achieve at least 60% for Mathematics
  • Mathematics Literacy and Technical Mathematics are not accepted
  • Must apply or be accepted for a BCom Accounting (CA-stream) qualification at a participating university
  • Combined household income must be R350 000 or less per year
  • Must write or have written the National Benchmark Tests (NBT)

Required Documents

Applicants must submit the following supporting documents:

  • Signed consent form
  • Applicant’s ID document
  • Parent or guardian ID documents
  • Parent or guardian salary slips
  • Copies of ID documents for all dependents in the household
  • Final Grade 11 results
  • Final Grade 12 results (if completed)
  • University academic transcript (if currently studying)
  • University provisional acceptance letter (if still in high school)

Incomplete applications may not be considered.
